Miami, Florida—
It was announced today by the Department of Transportation that Key West Airport and Monroe County are the recipients of a $7,510,381 Discretionary Grant Award. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (FL-26)  offered the following statement in strong support of DOT’s notice:

“I am proud that these funds were awarded to enhance the safety and operations of Key West Airport, a major economic engine in our community. These funds will make improvements to the airport’s drainage system, rehabilitate the aircraft parking area, and update the runway lighting systems. Those who rely on Key West Airport for both commercial and recreational flights, as well as the employees who work there, can do so knowing the facility is as safe as possible. I look forward to continue working with local officials throughout Monroe County and South Florida to secure grants from the federal government to improve the lives of our friends and neighbors.”

The authority for this grant was made available by H.R. 636, the FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016, which was signed into law on July 15, 2016. Rep. Curbelo, a strong supporter of this legislation and Member of the Aviation Subcommittee, included items to greatly improve air traffic safety. For more information, please click here.
