Representative Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) issued the following statement after the Trump administration announced additional sanctions against Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. The decision comes days after the U.S. Department of Treasury announcement imposing sanctions on 13 Venezuelan senior officials after the decision to ignore the results of non-binding referendum that would have overthrown the Maduro regime.

“I am grateful for the President’s decisiveness on this issue. The Constituent Assembly is a sham and a fraud to the people of Venezuela and the hemisphere. The Maduro regime’s moral bankruptcy and systematic corruption has led to a crackdown on human rights, violence against demonstrators, and a move towards single-party, totalitarian rule,” Curbelo said. “The U.S. must stand in solidarity with the opposition and people of Venezuela. The renewed sanctions reinforce that Maduro ‎and his henchmen will not be able to abuse and oppress the Venezuelan people with impunity.”

Prior to Sunday’s election, Curbelo took the House floor and reaffirmed his support for the Venezuelan people and commended the Administration’s warnings of the Maduro regime.
