Sunshine State News: Carlos Curbelo Pushes for Reforming Bail in the House

A South Florida Republican is teaming up with prominent figures from the left and the right to push for reforming bail.

Last week, U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., and U.S. Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Calif., unveiled the “Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act” which would send $10 million to the states over three years to encourage them from moving away from relying on bail to using pretrial assessments.

“The Pretrial Integrity and Safety Act encourages states to replace their existing bail systems with pretrial risk assessments — a more just system for evaluating the flight and safety risk of defendants facing trial,” Curbelo’s office noted. “An individualized risk assessment considers factors such as a person’s past criminal history and the current charge.”
