Representative Carlos Curbelo (FL-26), South Florida’s only Member of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee and the sponsor of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Permanence Act of 2017, welcomed the inclusion of legislation to permanently authorize VITA’s free tax preparation services in a new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reform bill released by the Committee earlier this week.

“Last year, Congress passed historic legislation reforming our outdated and broken tax code,” Curbelo said. “Thanks to a flatter, simpler tax code, taxpayers across the country and in South Florida are now able to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks. It’s now time for a new and improved IRS as well – an IRS that puts taxpayer service first. I am proud to see my bipartisan VITA Permanence Act of 2017 included in this reform bill. This important legislation permanently authorizes the VITA program, which provides free tax preparation and filing assistance for taxpayers making less than $54,000 and for those with a limited proficiency in English.”

Curbelo has been a consistent advocate for the VITA program. Last year, Curbelo introduced the “VITA Permanence Act of 2017,” H.R. 2901, bipartisan legislation to permanently extend the VITA program. He also led a group of 55 bipartisan Members of Congress in a letter to urge House Appropriations leaders to provide full and robust funding for these programs. During a Ways and Means Committee hearing earlier this year, Curbelo urged Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin to protect funding for programs like VITA. Curbelo was also honored to invite United Way Miami-Dade to Washington last year to testify before the Subcommittee on Oversight about the work they do to help South Floridians take full advantage of this free resource.
