Representative Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) issued the following statement on his vote against the balanced budget amendment considered in the House of Representatives today:

“Young Americans deserve a serious plan to secure the future - not empty gestures designed to give politicians material for their campaign ads. Our country is heading down an unsustainable path of government spending that must be reversed in order to preserve our way of life for future generations. Young workers are pouring billions of dollars into Social Security and Medicare with no assurances that these programs will be solvent when they retire. Many Americans in my generation do not even believe they will receive Social Security benefits. This is fundamentally unfair. Rather than engaging in today's meaningless exercise, I will continue working with Republican and Democratic colleagues to reform both mandatory and discretionary spending in a way that keeps our promise to America's seniors and younger generations alike.”
