Rep. Curbelo on Passage of H.R. 1314
Washington, D.C.—Today the House passed H.R. 1314, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015. Rep. Curbelo (FL-26) issued the following statement in support of its passage:
“Today’s passage of H.R. 1314 establishes spending levels for the next two fiscal years, bringing much needed stability to the Appropriations process. This bill will also lift the current caps on military spending which is crucial in providing certainty to the men and women tasked with keeping our nation safe.
In addition this bill will raise the U.S. Treasury’s borrowing limit through March of 2017. By taking this action, Congress and the White House have struck an important comprise to ensure our country does not go down the cataclysmicroad of defaulting on our debt.
Lastly, this bill makes necessary reforms to social programs by protecting seniors from a 50% increase in Medicare Part B premiums. The Social Security Disability Insurance Trust Fund will also remain solvent by closing loopholes and stopping fraud, preventing a 20% cut to benefits through 2022 while also generating $168 billion in long-term savings to strengthen the program.
While far from perfect, I believe this bill will provide much needed certainty to the American people and create anenvironment that is conducive to economic growth. This is also one final example of the tremendous leadership displayed by Speaker John Boehner and his ability to craft bipartisan legislation that maintains the full faith and credit of the United States.”
H.R. 1314 passed the House on October 28, 2015 by a vote of 266-167.
